I worked out by using a cube, a coffee cup, a bird, and a birdhouse in my artwork to express what it means to belong, and space as well. It seems as if the cube is a strong and well-made device, an item that people made and are keeping an eye on. That coffee cup signifies comfort and the grind of life.

The birdhouse makes you feel safe and protected, and the bird brings movement and freedom. I enjoy that these things don’t all fit together totally, but they have some elements in common. These sit in their very own spheres, and it’s hard to make any informed decisions about whether to stay or go, about being comfortable or free.

Dark colors lend a quiet yet somber feel to the picture, and the simple forms allow meaning to be conveyed without too much noise. The work of art that I see today is about finding a middle ground between freedom and regulations. It's about where and when we stop, the point by which flying ceases to do so.
