Seen Through Love
I made this artwork in Drawing III at Austin Peay State University as a tribute to my second-oldest brother, James. We talked on the phone almost every Thursday night about our hobbies and the kinds of paintings we enjoyed creating. He even painted a self-portrait of me. After he passed away in 2023, I felt compelled to create a portrait of him in 2024 as a way to honor his memory. One of the most difficult parts of making this artwork was choosing not to include his facial features. I wanted the piece to represent him, but leaving his face undefined reflected the sense of loss I felt and the challenge of holding onto memories of someone who is no longer here.
